The nominations for the Golden Globes were announced on Monday, December 11. The Breawinner is nominated for Best Animated Movie. The company Melusine Productions from Luxembourg was involved in its production.
The Breadwinner tells the story of 11-year-old Parvana, who disguises herself as a boy in order to support her family while her father is imprisoned by the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The film is a Canadian co-production and about half of the cast are Muslim and have Afghan heritage. The other co-producing countries are Luxembourg and Ireland. Oscar-winning actor-director Angelina Jolie is an executive producer.
The story is adapted from Canadian author Deborah Ellis’s children’s novel, which is based on the testimony of Afghan women she spoke with in refugee camps in Pakistan.
Melusine Production has been established in 1998 in Luxembourg and specialises in animated movies and documentaries. Other successful movies Melusine Productions worked on in the last years include Song of the Sea, Ernest et Celestine and Extraordinary Tales.
